Pain Management and Spine Surgery
Advanced Surgical and Non-Surgical Approaches for Back, Muscle, Nerve, and Joint Pain
Animas Surgical Hospital is at the forefront of spine surgery technology. Our board-certified and fellowship-trained spine specialists use a multidisciplinary approach to help patients regain their mobility, comfort, and function. Our physicians use advanced diagnostic technology to diagnose and treat spine, muscle, nerve, and joint pain. They can treat a wide range of conditions, including spinal stenosis, compressed nerves, herniated discs, or pinched nerves. When surgical intervention is necessary, physicians use minimally-invasive techniques to help reduce pain and get patients back to enjoying their normal, active lives. Animas Surgical Hospital is one of only two hospitals in Colorado to use 7D spine surgery navigation. This advanced image guidance system helps provide more precise accuracy of spine implants while reducing the use of radiation.
Whether through non-surgical pain management techniques or surgery, patients experience award-winning care at Animas Surgical Hospital. Our facility partners with three local, independently-owned practices in Durango, Colorado:
Animas Spine
Animas Spine is an integrated, multidisciplinary specialty clinic providing interventional musculoskeletal treatment of the spine. Board-certified physiatrists David Silva, DO, Patrick McLaughlin, MD, and Brandon Messerli, DO, specialize in non-surgical, interventional spine treatment for acute and recurrent spinal conditions, including electrodiagnostic (EMG/NCS) testing, regenerative medicine including Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), and Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) options for the joints and spine.
Services Offered at Animas Surgical Hospital include:
- Injection Therapy - Spine
- Injection therapy is a treatment option to help relieve back or neck pain. It delivers medication directly to the area causing the issue and helps reduce inflammation and discomfort.
- Rhizotomy / Radiofrequency Ablation
- A nonsurgical, minimally-invasive procedure that uses heat to reduce or stop the transmission of pain. Radiofrequency waves ablate or “burn” the nerve that is causing the pain, essentially eliminating the transmission of pain signals to the brain.
- Stem-Cell Therapy / BMAC / PRP
- A patient’s own stem cells are injected into problem areas of the body to regenerate healthy cells. Stem cell therapy shows promise as a natural alternative treatment for arthritis, knee, hip, shoulder, back pain, and more.

Services Offered at Animas Surgical Hospital include:
- Lumbar Spinal Fusion Surgery
- Surgery performed to join or fuse two vertebrae together and decrease pain from degenerated joints.
- Discectomy
- A very common procedure performed to relieve the pressure on nerves and help decrease leg pain. This minimally-invasive procedure is performed through a small incision to remove the portion of the disc that is putting pressure on the nerves.
- Laminectomy
- A type of surgery performed when the spinal canal becomes too narrow and compresses the spinal nerves, causing pain and sometimes other symptoms.
- Posterior Cervical Spine Fusion
- Surgery performed to join two vertebrae in the neck together. This is done through a midline approach through the back of the neck.
- Lateral Transpoas Interbody Fusion (XLIF)
- A minimally-invasive surgery performed to join or fuse two vertebrae together and decrease pain from degenerated joints. The spine is approached from the side with very small incisions.
- Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF)
- A procedure performed to address nerve pain caused by disc herniation, spinal stenosis, and/or splondylosis.
- Interspinous Process Decompression System (X-STOP)
- A minimally-invasive surgical procedure used to treat spinal stenosis. An implant is inserted between the spinous process of two vertebrae through a small incision. The procedure preserves the motion of the spine and does not cause a fusion of the vertebrae.
