Your ability to pay is not a determining factor for service.
Care is not based on your ability to pay. Our Durango staff works with you to help you understand the cost associated with procedures as well as available insurance coverage and payment plans. We can estimate costs in advance so there are no surprises on the day of your surgery.
If you have any questions about your bill or the anticipated costs of an upcoming procedure, our accounting team is available to assist you at any time. Please contact a Financial Counselor at (970) 403-1330. We also offer financial assistance for those who qualify.

All patients will receive a bill with itemized charges for each healthcare service provided by the facility. The bill will specifically identify any facility fee, provider fee, or specific charges that have been billed to insurance, and will include contact information for filing an appeal to protest charges.
You may receive a separate bill from the specialized physicians who may have treated you or assisted in your diagnosis. This may include:
- Emergency physicians, who will bill for any services you may have received in the Emergency Department
- Radiologists will bill for reading any x-rays or other diagnostic imaging that was taken while at the facility
- Pathologists will bill for any laboratory and/or pathology tests they may have read while you were at the hospital
- Anesthesiologists will bill for services received during any surgical procedures you may have undergone while at the hospital
If you have any questions regarding medical bills from individual physician offices, please contact them directly.
A facility fee is a charge that hospitals bill for outpatient services that is intended to compensate the hospital for its operational expenses. These charges are separate and distinct from the professional fee charged or billed by a doctor for professional services.
Per the Colorado Hospital Association, facility fees are best described as “care-team fees” – they pay for all of the people other than the doctors involved in care provided. Facility fee amounts can vary based on the level and type of services rendered during the visit.
After July 1st, 2024, Colorado House Bill (HB) 23-1215 prohibits charging, billing, or collecting a facility fee from patients if it is not covered by their health insurance for preventative health-care services provided in an outpatient setting.
As a courtesy to our patients, Animas Surgical Hospital will file all insurance claims on your behalf. Please keep in mind that it is your responsibility to make sure we have complete and accurate insurance information. If your insurance company denies the claim, full payment for services is ultimately your responsibility.
No, you do not need pre-authorization to see an Emergency Services doctor.
Animas Surgical Hospital is a fully licensed emergency care facility and emergency charges apply to all services. You will receive separate hospital and Emergency Services physician bills. You may also receive bills from a radiologist or pathologist, if those services are needed.
Patient care is our top priority. We understand the high costs associated with an emergency visit and provide excellent care in a cost-effective manner.
