A water main break has disrupted Animas Surgical Hospital operations while cleanup efforts continue. The hospital has temporarily closed its emergency department and canceled surgeries and diagnostic imaging appointments on Monday, August 25.
On Saturday, August 24, a water main break near the facility covered a large portion of the basement and parking garage with water.
The water main break has caused a complete loss of water supply, rendering essential services such as sanitation, patient care, and facility operations non-functional. As a result, the hospital administration has made the difficult decision to temporarily close the facility to ensure the safety and well-being of patients, staff, and visitors.
Because the water main break occurred during the weekend, few patients and staff were on-site during the incident. No patients needed to be transferred to other facilities, and emergency medical services have been alerted to redirect incoming patients to alternative hospitals.
“We’re incredibly thankful that the water main break occurred on the weekend,” said Meggin Roberts, CEO of Animas Surgical Hospital. “Had this happened during our busiest times, the impact on patient care and safety could have been far more severe. We’re grateful that we could act swiftly to protect our patients and staff.”
The hospital estimates that it could be as many as several days before all services are back up and running. Crews are actively working to clean up the site, and staff are notifying patients whose appointments may be affected. The extent of the damage is still being assessed.
Other facilities, including Animas Urgent Care, Animas Surgical Center at Escalante, and Southwest Endoscopy Center were unaffected by the water main break. The team is working to move urgent appointments and procedures to other facilities, when possible.
