Dr. Jay Mathers earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder and his medical degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. After completing his residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, he became board certified in family medicine. Dr. Mathers is also certified in travel medicine, and he is a wilderness medicine fellowship candidate.
Dr. Mathers has been a ski patrolman, Outward Bound instructor, and high altitude researcher, and he has completed numerous ascents and rescues in Denali, Alaska. In addition to his duties as an emergency medicine physician at Animas Surgical Hospital, Dr. Mathers teaches avalanche and rescue training to other medical professionals. He lives with his wife and two sons in Durango.
